Liberty and Virginia’s future football series have been cancelled, according to a copy of the mutual cancellation of football agreement and first reported by FBSchedules.

The Flames and Cavaliers were scheduled to play a four game, home and home series with games in Charlottesville in 2023 and 2030 and in Lynchburg in 2027 and 2029. The cancellation, which was executed on Dec. 6, 2021 requires no further obligations from either party.

Liberty is headed to Conference USA beginning with the 2023 season, and, as a result of this move and others, the Flames have begun the process to trim down its future football schedules. In some seasons, Liberty has to move from 12 games to just four non-conference games per season.

Previously, Liberty’s game against Appalachian State in Lynchburg, originally scheduled for Oct. 11, 2025, has been pushed back to Nov. 8, 2031.

Update: According to a copy of an amendment to the original contract of this series, Appalachian State’s return game to Lynchburg will not happen until Nov. 8, 2031. The game in Boone, North Carolina is still scheduled for Sept. 28, 2024.

Virginia and Liberty have met twice previously, with both matchups happening since the Flames moved to the FBS ranks. The Cavaliers defeated Liberty in both games, played in Charlottesville, 45-24 on Nov. 10, 2018 and, 55-27 on Nov. 23, 2019.
