Here are some quick-hit notes following Liberty’s 20-19 season finale loss against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers:

  • Ouch. Liberty closes out their final season at the FCS level with a heartbreaking loss to the Bucs thanks to a 42-yard field goal by CSU in the closing seconds of the game.
  • The game started out with a pair of punts traded by both teams. In his third possession of the game, Buckshot was pressured, leading to an INT on an ill-advised heave down the field into traffic. This was Buckshots first interception in 179 pass attempts, dating back to October 14th against Kennesaw State.
  • Buckshot continues to break records. He set the single-season passing record for the Flames in this game and he topped out the single-season TD record at 29. He was 25/44 for 255 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT today.
  • After having a 46-yard screen pass called back early in the 2nd quarter, WR Antonio Gandy-Golden mossed a CSU defender for a 22-yard TD catch with 5:32 left in the 1st half. He then hauled in a slant pass for 10 yards at the 2:42 mark in the 3rd. Despite missing last week with a lower-body injury, AGG finished the game with 10 catches for 113 yards and 2 touchdowns.
  • The ground game was non-existent after sustained success with it in recent weeks. The Flames finished with 51 rushings yards. This could have partly been because RB Carrington Mosley was injured with over 9 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. Liberty won every game this season when they had a 100-yard rusher. They lost every game without one.
  • Defensive struggles continued as the Flames gave up 415 total yards. 229 on the ground and 186 through the air.
  • K Alex Probert connected on two field goals today. One from 27 yards and the potential game-winner of 49 yards which was a new career high for him. He did have an extra point blocked.
  • Turner Gill’s 16-5 November record is impressive. But now, 4 of those losses have come against CSU.
  • Liberty finishes the season with a 6-5 record for the 3rd consecutive year and 4th time in Turner Gill’s six seasons.
  • The Flames would finish 4th in conference play with a 2-3 record if they were eligible. Their first losing conference record since ’05.
  • Now all eyes look forward to Liberty’s inaugural FBS season and who will lead us into it.
