On Monday, Virginia Tech announced that the Flames and Hokies “have mutually agreed” to cancel their football games scheduled for the 2029 and 2030 seasons. The Hokies and Flames were set to meet in Blacksburg in 2029 and in Lynchburg in 2030. The two programs will still face off twice in Blacksburg, in 2027 and 2028, as previously scheduled.
The 2029 game would have been a season opener in Blacksburg with a return trip to Lynchburg in 2030. The schools agreed to the cancellation mutually, so neither side will owe the other a $500,000 buyout per the contract. The two games still on the books are both scheduled to be in Blacksburg and set as season openers on Sept. 4, 2027 and Sept. 2, 2028.
Virginia Tech recently canceled a game with James Madison as they attempt to make adjustments to their future football schedules to allow nine-game conference schedules.
As will continue to be the case, Liberty has had difficulty scheduling Power Four opponents for football as part of the non-conference slate. The Flames have not faced a team from the P4 leagues since the 2022 season when Liberty hosted Virginia Tech at Williams Stadium on November 19, a 23-22 Hokies victory. That season Liberty played three P4 opponents, also facing Arkansas and Wake Forest.
Liberty is 1-2 all-time against the Hokies, having defeated Virginia Tech on Nov. 7, 2020 in Blacksburg, 38-35. Liberty lost to Virginia Tech, 36-13, on Sept. 3, 2016.
