Earlier this week, Liberty head football coach Hugh Freeze was interviewed by Alan York for the first installment of Wednesday with the Flames. Among various topics, one of the most surprising statements Freeze made was when asked what part of the Liberty football team he expected to be most improved in 2020.

“Probably linebacker play would be the one that I expect us to improve on, maybe because I think that group had the farthest to come.”

The linebacker position is the one that has the most question marks entering the 2020 season following the departure of seniors Solomon Ajayi and Brandon Tillmon, who spent much of the 2019 campaign as starter at the two linebacker spots.

Replacing them is a relatively inexperienced group that includes Amarii Jenkins, Waylen Cozad, Tyren Dupree, and Malik Caper. The Flames will also be relying on Charlotte grad transfer Anthony Butler.

Defensive coordinator Scott Symons was moved from coach of the safeties to linebackers coach following the departure of Kyle Pope who left for Memphis.

“I think he takes a lot of pride in making sure his position plays very well,” Freeze said of Symons. “I would expect that group to be more consistent than we were last year.”
