Former Liberty defensive end Jessie Lemonier has died at the age of 25, the Detroit Lions have announced.

“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of former Detroit Lion Jessie Lemonier,” the Lions stated on their social media accounts. “Jessie was a model teammate and wonderful young man who is gone far too soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Lemonier was a standout defensive end at Liberty during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. He had 135 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, and 20.5 sacks during his time with the Flames. He ranked third among FBS players nationally in total sacks recorded during the 2018 and 2019 campaigns.

Lemonier was undrafted in 2020 but signed as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Chargers before signing with the Lions’ practice squad in 2021. He was promoted to the 53-man roster shortly thereafter and played in seven games with 1.5 sacks while with the Lions. Lemonier also spent time with the Arizona Cardinals.

Lemonier capped off his career at Liberty by earning MVP honors in the 2019 Cure Bowl, helping the Flames secure their first ever bowl game victory. He finished the win over Georgia Southern with eight tackles and two sacks.

“The Liberty Athletics family is deeply saddened to learn about the passing of former Flames football great Jessie Lemonier,” a statement from Liberty read. “Jessie was loved by Flames Nation for being a fierce competitor on the gridiron and cherished by his coaches and teammates in the locker room. Liberty Athletics will continue to keep his family and friends in our prayers that God may bring peace and comfort to them during the difficult days ahead.”
