Liberty (11-3) increased its win streak to nine games after going 4-0 for a second consecutive week. The Flames opened the week with an 8-0 shutout victory over High Point before returning home to sweep a three-game weekend series against Harvard. Behind strong starting pitching, clutch hitting, and continued offensive production from the entire lineup, the Flames improved to 11-3 on the season.
Tuesday: Liberty 8, High Point 0
Liberty followed their big home midweek win against High Point last week with an encore performance on the road this week.
Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Jaxon Sorenson was walked home, and that would be the only run until the top of the seventh inning as pitching held strong on both sides. In the seventh, a Ryan Drumm single brought home a run as the Flames took a 2-0 lead. Liberty blew the game wide open in the eighth, scoring six runs as a Josh Campos grand slam put Liberty up 8-0, essentially shutting the door on the Panthers.
Aside from the grand slam, Campos recorded three total hits which marked his second multi-hit game of the year. Tanner Marsh continued his hit streak to eight games. Starter Cooper Harrington earned the win in his first start of the season, striking out a career-high eight over six scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. The right-hander did not allow a runner past second base during his outing. Liberty’s relievers continued the dominant performance, allowing zero runs and not letting a runner past second base as the Flames recorded their first shut-out win of the season.
Marsh continued his hot start to the year, finishing 3-for-5 with two RBI and a stolen base, while Campos drove in three runs with two hits. Liberty totaled twelve hits in the contest, despite leaving thirteen runners stranded on base.
Five LU pitchers combined to limit the Panthers to just four hits while striking out 15 batters. Liberty’s Kaleb Smith earned his first collegiate victory in relief as the Flames improved to 4-3 on the year.
Friday Game 1: Liberty 9, Harvard 3
Liberty took advantage of a 5-run second inning and never looked back as the Flames took Game 1 of the series vs Harvard.
The crazy thing is, Liberty did not bring in a single run that inning by hitting the ball. Four runs were walked in, and another run was brought in via Ryan Drumm being hit by a pitch as Crimson starting pitcher Colasante was pulled early in the ballgame. A Tanner Marsh RBI double and a Dylan Gabrowski RBI single increased the Flames’ lead to 7-0 in the fourth, and then the Flames tacked on two more runs to go up 9-0 through six innings. Harvard would tack on three runs against Liberty’s bullpen in the seventh and eighth innings, but the game was never really in question as the Flames closed the door quickly in the ninth.
Starting pitcher Ben Blair earned another win after tossing five scoreless innings, allowing three hits while striking out 10 without issuing a walk in another solid outing for the Flames’ ace. It marked Blair’s second straight start with double-digit strikeouts.
Saturday Game 2: Liberty 11, Harvard 7
Liberty erased a two-run deficit with three runs in the fourth inning and pulled away late on Saturday to defeat Harvard 11-7 at Worthington Field.
The bats were hot on Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg, as the Flames and Crimson combined for eleven runs in the first three innings. After Harvard scored two in the third to take a 7-5 lead, the Flames answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to reclaim the lead. Jaxon Sorenson drove in a run with a groundout before Liberty tied the game on a steal of home by Nick Barone. Josh Campos followed with an RBI single to put the Flames ahead 8-7.
Campos and Marsh tacked on three more runs in the seventh via a Campos 2-run homer and a Marsh RBI single to increase their lead to 11-7. That lead would hold as the Flames claimed the series. Liberty reliever Josh Swink was awarded the win, as Swink gave up one unearned run on two hits over four innings. Tyler August pitched two scoreless innings to shut the door on Harvard as the Flames’ pitchers went from allowing seven runs in the first four innings to zero in the next five.
Sunday Game 3: Liberty 5, Harvard 4
Sunday’s finale proved to be the most exciting game of the weekend slate, as the Flames completed the sweep of the Harvard Crimson in thrilling fashion.
Harvard opened the scoring with a sac fly in the top of the first, but Liberty rallied with three runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to a Sorenson RBI single and a Nick Barone RBI triple.
Liberty would add a run in the bottom of the seventh, but a four-run eighth inning by the Crimson evened the game at 4-4. Liberty would respond in the ninth. Jaxon Sorenson led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch before Josh Campos delivered a two-out double over the center fielder’s head to bring Sorenson home for the game-winning walk-off run.
Josh Campos has come alive as of late for the Flames. Campos hit .500 this past week, going 8-for-16 with seven RBI and six runs over the last four games. Despite being awarded a no-decision, Bradley Zayayc delivered another great starting performance from the mound for Liberty. Zayac allowed one run over seven innings while striking out seven. Ayden Decker-Petty earned the win in relief, striking out three over the final 1 1/3 innings. Tanner Marsh increased his hit streak to eleven consecutive games with a single in the eighth inning as the Flames secured their second straight perfect week.
