On Wednesday, Liberty commit Colin Porter made it official as he signed his National Letter of Intent to play for Ritchie McKay and the Flames. He will join the class of 2022 alongside a pair of 6’7″ forwards in Zach Cleveland and Ben Southerland.

“I think when it is all said and done, this freshmen class could be arguably as good as any that we have signed during our tenure,” said head coach Ritchie McKay via a school release. “We cannot wait to see how this group transitions from high school basketball to college basketball. i think they will have the support and the ability to impact our program right away.”

Porter, originally part of the 2023 class before opting to reclassify a few months ago, committed to Liberty in October. The 5’11”, 160 pound point guard from Ashland, Kentucky was offered by the Flames last summer after taking his first unofficial visit to campus. He took an official visit that fall and committed on the heels of that visit. Porter chose Liberty over several offers including Marshall, Akron, Morehead State, Lipscomb, Western Carolina, Western Kentucky, and Radford.

This past season, playing for Paul G. Blazer High School, Porter averaged 17.1 points, 6.9 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game while shooting 55% from the field, 38% from three, and 86% from the charity stripe. His play helped earn him first-team all-state honors in Kentucky. Porter and his team advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the KHSSA High School Boys Playoff, finishing with a 26-6 overall record and placing 10th in the state.

“Colin’s reclassification has elevated the profile of our 2022 class,” McKay stated. “He is a true point guard that really has that unique ability to make everyone else on the floor better, as well as a toughness that will translate quickly to our level. Like many of our players, he comes from a terrific high school program where he has experienced winning and has had a huge hand in a lot of those wins.”
