We recently had a chance to catch up with incoming freshman guard Colin Porter. The 5’10,” 160-pound three-star point guard from Ashland, Kentucky committed to Liberty before reclassifying to the class of 2022. This will allow him to sign with the Flames this spring and enroll at Liberty for the 2022-23 season.

Porter is a 5’11” guard from Ashland, Kentucky where he attends Paul G. Blazer High School. He played in 23 games this season for Blazer High where he averaged 17.1 points, 6.9 assists, 4.3 rebounds, 2.5 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game. He committed to Liberty in early October over offers from Marshall, Akron, Morehead State, Lipscomb, Western Kentucky, Western Carolina, and Radford.

It seems like Kentucky is known a lot for bluegrass, college basketball, and stories about the mountains. In your opinion, what is the best part of living in Kentucky?

“The best part about growing up in Kentucky is the relaxed feel you have. My life has been filled with basketball, family cookouts, and my entire family going to church in a small town church of about 30 people each Sunday.”

It’s no secret you aren’t the tallest player, but judging from your stat line that doesn’t keep you from being a well-balanced threat. How are you able to have such a complete game even though you might be considered undersized?

“I’ve always been undersized, but I have always wanted to win. This want-to-win has allowed me to play above my height.”

Besides basketball, what could we likely find you doing in your free time?

“Definitely playing some video games to relax.”

What player(s) do you model your game from most?

“Growing up in Kentucky, I loved watching Tyler Ulis. He had a chip on his shoulder every night.”

You averaged some serious steals this season. How do you excel on defense?

“One of my role models was my brother and he had the best hands I had ever seen. Just growing up and playing with him allowed me to develop that same skill.”

What would senior Colin tell freshman Colin?

“No matter the good or bad games always give glory to God. This talent was given to me for a reason and I believe it was to give all the glory to Him!”

What is the most unforgettable highlight play from your high school career?

“During a game in 2020, my teammate, Cole Villers, hit a full-court shot to win a game and it kept our undefeated season alive. The joy we all felt was something I will never forget.”

Do you have any idea what you plan on majoring in at Liberty?

“Sports management and marketing.”

What do you think will be your best strength for the Flames as a freshman?

“I think it will be my ability to make everyone around me better. I don’t believe there are many old-school point guards anymore and I believe I have that style in me.”

If you had to guard Darius, what would be your strategy?

“Yell for Joseph (Venzant) to come and guard him.”
