With spring football practice getting started today, here’s 6 position battles to keep an eye on:

1. Running back Des Rice

Not all position battles are huge question marks, and that’s certainly the case at running back for the Flames. But how will the carries be split between Des Rice, DJ Abnar, and Todd Macon?

2. Backup QB

Masha was unable to lead the Flames to victory over CSU

Stephon Masha or J.T. Bradwell? Masha certainly has the leg up, and whoever wins this battle will be the man to beat for starting QB in 2016.

3. Linebacker newman

With the graduations of Bobby Partilla, Andrew Jauch, Nick Sigmon, and Dylan Lewellyn, the Flames lose 74 career starts. Nick Newman, Jimmy O’Grady, and Dexter Robbins will be the new leaders of the unit. How will the depth and rotation work out?

4. Safety hagen

Trying to replace Jacob Hagen will be nearly impossible, but Gary Sampson, A.J. James, and Alpha Jalloh may try to do it by committee.

5. Defensive line chima

Two starters in Toby Onyechi and Dominique Davis must be replaced. Look for JaRon Greene’s role to increase and a youngster to step up.

6. Slot WR

Gabe Henderson came up big again for the Flames this week.

Gabe  Henderson was Liberty’s 2nd leading receiver a season ago. Several will be fighting for his spot including Dakota Kelly, B.J. Farrow, and Zac Parker.
