Liberty looks to rebound from their season opening loss to Virginia Tech in their home opener against Jacksonville University tonight in Williams Stadium. Here’s what the Flames need to do in order to come away with the W.

1 – Play a Cleaner Game

The Flames were sloppy last week against Virginia Tech. Very sloppy. 13 penalties, 4 turnovers and a safety to be exact. They can’t expect to have a successful season if they play with such little discipline the rest of the year. Yes, part of it was playing in the hostile environment of Lane Stadium, but they’re still a much smarter team than they showed last week. If Liberty is able to play a cleaner game, they should be victorious.

2 – Get the Offense Going

Another area of struggle last week was the offense as a whole. They only managed 160 total yards and one offensive touchdown. And that offensive touchdown only happened because the defense set them up at the Tech 10 yard line. The Flames need to establish the run early, and that will open up the air attack and help out Stephon Masha. The defense showed they’re capable of competing with anyone last week, now let’s see if the offense can turn it around.

3 – Feed Off the Home Crowd

Last season, Liberty was a perfect 5-0 at home including wins over nationally ranked teams Coastal Carolina and Montana, so it’s no secret the Flames are a better team at home. Flames Nation will be electric for the home opener, and the Flames need to use that to their advantage. Get off to a good start, keep the fans loud the entire game, and it’ll be a successful home opener for Liberty.
