Update 4/12/17: Newton has officially signed with the Flames, as announced by Coach McKay this afternoon. He was named a 2017 McDonald’s All-American nominee after scoring over 2,200 carer points, hauling in 1,548 career rebounds, and registering 579 career blocks. As a senior, Newton averagged 19.5 points and 14.9 rebounds per game. Newton and Faith Christian won the VACA State Championship in each of his final 2 seasons and placed 3rd in the NACA National Tournament in 2017 following his team’s National Championship in 2016.

Update 5/4/16: Newton has committed to Liberty. He is a 4-star rated prospect according to ESPN, 3-star according to Scout and Rivals. Newton also had offers from Appalachian State and Longwood. He finished his junior season as the VACA Player of the Year while helping lead his team to a 32-1 record. Faith Christian won the school’s first ever state title and also claimed a national championship. Newton averaged 21 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 4 blocks per game while shooting 65% from the field.

Update 5/30/15: McKay has informed Newton that the scholarship offer he received under the previous coaching staff is still valid. 247 Sports ranks him as a 3-star prospect. Liberty is still his only offer at this point, but he has received interest from several schools including Virginia Tech, Virginia, Wake Forest, Davidson, Clemson, and Ohio. This past year, his sophomore season, he upped his averages to 18 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 5.2 blocks per game. Vantage Hoops ranks him as the #2 prospect in the state of Virginia. He will attend Liberty’s elite camp in June.

Liberty was the first to offer Newton and he will likely pick up interest from other Division I schools this year. During his freshman season, while playing on the varsity team, Newton averaged 8.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 4.2 blocks per game.
