The Liberty Flames have moved into the AP Top 25 this week for the first time in program history following the program’s 6-0 start to the 2020 campaign. That ranking doesn’t keep the second year FBS program from being a road underdog this week against unranked Virginia Tech (4-2) in Blacksburg. The Hokies are currently listed as 15.5 point favorites in the game that is scheduled to kickoff this coming Saturday at noon on ACC Network.

The Flames will be looking to back that Top 25 ranking up with its second win over an ACC opponent this season. Liberty knocked off Syracuse, 38-21, in the Carrier Dome on Oct. 17. The Flames were slight favorites in that matchup against the Orange.

Liberty is coming off a bye week following the team’s 56-35 win over Southern Miss on Oct. 24. The Hokies improved to 4-2 on the season thanks to its 42-35 win on the road against Louisville this past Saturday. This will be the second ever meeting between the two programs who are located less than 100 miles from one another. Virginia Tech defeated Liberty, when the Flames were FCS members, 36-13 to open the 2016 season. Despite having fewer scholarship players, Liberty was able to claim a 13-10 second quarter lead thanks to a 71 yard fumble return for touchdown by Alpha Jalloh. The Hokies would then run off 26 unanswered points to seal the win.
