Kaidon Salter has been named Liberty’s starting quarterback as the Flames prepare to open the season on Saturday, Sep. 2 against Bowling Green, sources have confirmed to ASOR.

Salter battled throughout the spring, summer and training camp with Johnathan Bennett, Trey Lowe, and Nate Hampton for the job. Liberty head coach Jamey Chadwell announced that he had named a starter Wednesday, Aug. 23 in a press conference, but also stated the team would not be announcing that starter publicly prior to game day against the Falcons.

The redshirt-sophomore, Salter saw playing time in 8 games in 2022, missing several due to a groin injury. He completed 87 of 149 passes for 1,088 yards, 8 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. He also rushed 69 times for 285 yards and 2 additional scores. The former four-star recruit obviously has some talent and likely has the highest ceiling of any quarterback in the Liberty room. At times, Salter struggled with protecting the football and with decision making.

Last season, Salter was the third quarterback on Liberty’s roster entering the season. He quickly rose up the ranks, entering the season opener late in the game after starter Charlie Brewer was injured in the first quarter and Bennett struggled to help lead the offense and move the ball consistently.

Salter’s high potential as a dual-threat quarterback was immediately evident. He also showcased his talents and nearly helped the Flames pull off the upset of Top 25 Wake Forest in Week 3 last year before the team failed to convert a two-point conversion in the closing minutes which would have game the team the lead.

His season was derailed some with a groin injury midway through the year. It forced him to miss valuable practice time as a young quarterback and new starter. The injury also forced him to miss several games during the middle of the season and Bennett returned to the lineup as the team’s starting quarterback during that time before Salter returned to action later in the season.
