Year four of the Hugh Freeze era gets underway with a road trip to Southern Miss on Sept. 3. Today, we continue our early look at Liberty’s 2022 schedule as the Flames head to Norfolk to take on in-state foe Old Dominion.

WHO: Old Dominion (6-7, 5-3 CUSA)

WHEN: Oct. 1, TBD

WHERE: S.B. Ballard Stadium (19,818)

SERIES: Liberty leads 2-1

WHAT’S NEW: After sitting out the 2020 season and being one of the more inexperienced teams in the country in 2021, the Monarchs now moving to the Sun Belt where they will be looking to get to a second straight bowl game in Ricky Rahne’s second year.

WHO TO WATCH, OFFENSE: The Monarchs have several talented weapons returning on offense including WR Ali Jennings, TE Zack Kuntz, and RB Blake Watson.

WHO TO WATCH, DEFENSE: R’Tarriun Johnson and Ryan Henry help lead a veteran ODU defense in 2022.

OUTLOOK: After starting 2021 at 1-6 under first year head coach Ricky Rahne, ODU rebounded to win five straight and become just the third team to recover from that big a hole and reach a bowl game. The Monarchs would lose in their bowl game, to finish the year at 6-7. Now, Rahne and ODU return 17 starters and look to make a splash in their first season in the Sun Belt.
