In a gritty, defensive battle, Liberty found just enough offense to escape Maine with a 28-7 victory. But not every unit passed the test. Here’s how the team graded out.

Quarterbacks: B

  • Vasko had 3 passing touchdowns, 1 rushing score, 260 total yards. He was accurate and poised. Some missed throws, but no turnovers and a strong debut.

Running Backs: B-

  • Balanced attack – 194 rushing yards – but no explosive breakout.3 backs plus Vasko featured in the run game. Vaughn Blue left the game early due to injury and did not return.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends: B

  • Several receivers contributed with two catching touchdown passes. There were some drops/misplays, but the depth looks to be a strength. The team needs a go-to threat to emerge.

Offensive Line: C

  • Gave up pressure. Run blocking was solid but not overpowering. Improvement needed especially as competition ramps up.

Run Defense: C+

  • The Flames allowed 184 rushing yards, which is too much against an FCS team. Most of that came on chunk plays including a 77-yard score. There is some room for optimism here, but the team needs to shore up those explosive plays.

Pass Defense: A

  • Maine was held to just 132 passing yards. P ass rush (3 sacks) and coverage were solid throughout while creating two turnovers (strip sack and INT).

Special Teams: C-

  • Missed field goal of 38 yards. Punting was average. no big returns or major errors though it looks like Juju Gray could break a kick return every time he touches it.

It was a slow start to the game and season for the Flames, but Liberty flashed in the fourth quarter showing their potential of being a CUSA contender. The Flames will need more consistent execution early on against better opponents, slow starts won’t be so easily forgiven moving forward.
