This week’s ASOR Player of the Week is Darius McGhee.

The reigning ASUN Player of the Year could make a case for our POTW every week based on his production in each game, but this week there was no debate on who to give the honor to. McGhee was the Flames’ only consistent scoring option this week, scoring 22 and 23 points respectively, along with 6 rebounds and 3 steals in both games.

McGhee has retained his role as Liberty’s top scoring option from last season, while playing a larger role in handling the ball. The Roxboro, NC native is averaging 18.1 points per game, 3.1 rebounds per game, 2.5 assists per game, and is shooting the ball from the field at a 46.1% clip. McGhee is undoubtedly one of the greatest players to put on a Flames uniform and the senior further stamped his legacy into Liberty Men’s basketball history on Monday night. With seven three-pointers against Carver, McGhee passed Ryan Kemrite to become the all-time three-point leader in Flames basketball history.

Coach McKay has previously stated that Darius McGhee could lead the nation in scoring, but that he doesn’t need to. While that statement still rings true, McGhee’s scoring production has had to increase this season for the Flames to compete in games. As a veteran on a young team, it has been crucial for Liberty to keep the senior guard on the floor as he is the generator of a majority of the Flames offense. As a young Liberty team continues to find its identity on offense, McGhee will continue to lead the way as the Flames look to end non-conference play strong.
