This week’s ASOR Player of the Week, is Darius McGhee. Shocker, right? At this point, everyone knows that McGhee makes a solid case to be our pick for POTW every week, but there was no way we couldn’t give him the honor this week.

On Tuesday against Lipscomb, McGhee recorded his first career double-double with 29 points and 10 assists. McGhee was just two assists away from a triple-double with eight as the Flames defeated the Bisons. On Saturday against Jacksonville, McGhee torched the Dolphins, scoring 26 points in just the first half. McGhee would cool off in the second half as the Flames would lose, but the senior still finished the night with an impressive 30 point, five assist, and four rebound outing.

McGhee is playing at an elite level. The 2020-21 ASUN Player of the Year looks to be the clear front-runner for repeating as the award winner. McGhee leads the nation in total points and is top five in the country in points per game. McGhee has moved into the top ten on Liberty’s all-time scoring list and has broken the all-time three-pointers made record and single-season three-pointers made record, establishing himself as Liberty’s all-time three-point king. The Roxboro, NC native is also on track to break the ASUN Conference record for most three-pointers made in a season.

The elite scorer leads the Flames with 22.7 points per game but contributes in more ways than just scoring the basketball. McGhee also leads the team in steals (1.3 per game), while also averaging four rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. McGhee’s rebound and assist averages are just .3 lower than the leaders on the team.

Darius McGhee is an elite player and it’s been awesome to see him break so many records in what may be his final season as a Flame. Despite the loss to Jacksonville, the Flames still control their own destiny in getting the number one overall seed and home-court advantage in the ASUN Tournament. With just five regular-season games remaining, McGhee and the Flames will travel to North Florida in hopes of getting back in the win column and defeating the Ospreys in their building for the very first time. While the final stretch won’t be easy for Liberty, you can’t help but like their chances with McGhee in a Flames uniform.
