Injury update
The Flames are in pretty good shape in the injury department. Last week, the only injury concern was safety Gary Sampson, who started and played well throughout the Carolina game. Wide receiver Darrin Peterson got nicked up during the UNC game, but Coach Gill was quick to address him as being “good to go” for the Norfolk State game.

Macon was named Big South FOW

Macon named Big South FOW
Running back Todd Macon was named Big South Freshman of the Week following his performance last Saturday against the Tar Heels. Macon led the Flames with 67 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns while averaging 5.2 yards per carry.

Backup QB battle
One of the interesting battles from the preseason has carried over into the early part of the season. The backup quarterback competition between Javan Shashaty and Stephon Masha has been labeled by Gill as “situational.” Masha was the only one to play against Carolina, as he got the final series. Coach Gill said this was because he wanted Masha to see game action. It will be interesting to watch this competition as the season progresses.

Ervin faces Flames
We’ve mentioned it in various places throughout the week, but former Liberty commit Terrance Ervin will be on the opposing sideline when the Flames visit Norfolk State on Saturday. Ervin committed to Liberty in June 2013, before decomitting and eventually signing with Norfolk State. He will likely see time at quarterback when the Flames and Spartans meet this weekend.

Flames’ uniform combination
Liberty will wear white helmets, white jerseys, and red pants this weekend at Norfolk State. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the new red matte helmets debuted next week for the home opener.

Other sports
Liberty’s other Fall sports have started their seasons.

  • The men’s soccer team has started with a 2-0 mark on the year with a 2-1 win over Bluefield and 5-0 victory over VMI.
  • The women’s volleyball team is 3-1 early, with wins over San Jose State, Elon, and James Madison. The Lady Flames lone loss came to Maryland.
  • The women’s soccer team is 1-2 with a win over Old Dominion and losses to UNC Greensboro and Appalachian State.
  • The women’s field hockey team is 1-1 with a win over Pacific and a loss to #12 Stanford.

FlameFans thread of the week
An interesting discussion broke out in the Norfolk State Game Preview thread. Give it a read, but be sure  you have a few minutes to spare.
