Earlier this week, CBS’ Matt Zenitz reported that Liberty safeties coach Aaron Fierbaugh is heading to Appalachian State in the same position.
Fierbaugh has been on the Liberty staff for the past three seasons, coming to Lynchburg as part of Chadwell’s initial coaching staff with the Flames. Prior to his time at Liberty, Fierbaugh was at Coastal Carolina where he coached the inside linebackers in 2022 and was a defensive analyst in 2021. Previously, he was a defensive quality control assistant at South Carolina from 2016-21 and a student assistant at Auburn from 2013-16.
This continues the coaching staff movement for Liberty football since the end of the 2025 season. The Flames’ co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Willy Korn announced he was stepping away from football. LB Coach Josh Linam took a similar position at JMU, and co-defensive coordinators and secondary coach Kyle Krantz left for Colorado State. Liberty assistant linebacker coach Bobby Ruff recently took a head coaching job in the high school ranks in South Carolina.
Liberty has added former Virginia Tech outside linebackers coach Shawn Quinn as defensive coordinator. Teddy Gallagher was also promoted from outside linebackers coach to linebackers coach.
The co-offensive coordinator and QB coach and safeties coach position have not been officially filled.
Liberty is looking to rebound from a 4-8 season in 2025. The Flames were very successful in Chadwell’s first season in 2023, going 13-1, winning the CUSA Championship before advancing to the Fiesta Bowl against Oregon.
