The Flames suffered through some injuries to some of their top corners last season, greatly affecting the output this unit had on the field during 2024. Right now, the corner back room is healthy and, with the addition of a couple of transfers added to the group, the coaching staff is hopeful they can take a step forward in their production.
Frontrunners
26 Amarian Williams SR 5’10” 175
Moe Williams has been a key part of the Flames’ plans at corner each of the past three seasons. In 2023, he started at corner and was very effective, shutting down his side of the field most of the season. Last year, he was expected to take a step forward and even grow into an all-conference performer, but despite playing most of the season, he was playing on an injured leg throughout the year. Through the midway point of camp, Williams has been healthy and is looking like himself once again.
Liberty Cornerbacks coach Dino Waites – “Mo Williams has done a great job over the summer, just battling back from that injury last year, and then just to see him change as far as being a leader and maturing and really buying all the way in to what we’re doing here. It’s going to help our team out tremendously.”
Competition
5 Elijah Hopkins R-JR 5’10” 195
Hopkins began his career at Coastal Carolina where he saw playing time in four games as a true freshman in 2022, playing for much of this same Liberty coaching staff. He would follow them to Liberty for the 2023 season, where he played in nine games. Last year, Hopkins played in four games. The biggest thing holding him back has been injuries that have plagued him throughout much of his career. If he is able to stay healthy, he should have a big role in the Liberty secondary this fall.
Liberty Cornerbacks coach Dino Waites – “We’re hoping to keep him healthy and see him work through a whole season, that’s going to be exciting. He’s an athlete. He played all over in high school. DB is kind of new to him. Every year that he gets a chance to consistently work through it, and he’s starting to hit his stride. He probably can be one of the high level DBs, really just football players in general, in our conference. I see it already happening, the progression of him getting better. I can see him hitting his stride and being a really big impact player for us.”
13 Damond Harmon SR 6’0″ 170
Originally from Richmond, Harmon was a four-star recruit out of Highland Springs. He spent his first two seasons at Oklahoma where he played in 18 games and made two starts for the Sooners. Harmon suffered a very scary injury on Oct. 1, 2022 in the fourth quarter of a game at TCU. The injury occurred as he made a tackle, leaving him motionless, requiring immobilization before he was carted off the field. He was transported to a local Fort Worth hospital where he was treated and released later that day. He did not play anywhere in 2023 and was at Liberty in 2024, working with the scout team. Now, he has the ability to step into a key role in the secondary. He has been described as the most talented corner all the team. Let’s see if he can put it all together for the Flames.
Liberty Cornerbacks coach Dino Waites – “Chadwell took him on faith and said this is your last stop, your last opportunity. Even to the fact that he wasn’t able to play last year, it was kind of like a test run. He went scout team. He was down with the offense. He did whatever for the team, definitely had some hard times, some times t hat make you tough because you want to play. He did everything we asked him to do. He worked his butt off in the classroom. He worked his butt off on the football field for us. You can see the ability. He has the ability. We are looking forward to seeing how he can get in on the field. I think it’ll be pretty exciting.”
20 Dexter Ricks R-JR 5’11” 180
Ricks has played in 25 games over the past two seasons for the Flames at corner. He has 50 tackles, 2 TFLs, and 2 interceptions during this time. He is now one of the more experienced players in the room, and he should be able to provide some consistency for the Flames.
Liberty Cornerbacks coach Dino Waites – “Dexter Ricks was really consistent for us last year, and already seeing him compete to get better.”
Depth
16 Quavo Marshall R-FR 6’4″ 180
Marshall transferred to Liberty over the off-season from Kentucky where he spent his true freshman season last year and redshirted. He has length that could make a big impact on the field in the defensive secondary.
23 Myke Gunn FR 6’3″ 180
From Auburn, Alabama, Gunn is a true freshman who was a mid-year enrollee, joining the team for the spring semester. He recorded 60 tackles last season, helping Auburn High to a 10-1 record. He has impressed the coaching staff throughout his time on the Mountain, and he should be able to get in the mix on the field this fall.
Liberty Cornerbacks coach Dino Waites – “We are still in the business of developing players, and the way that you develop is you try to find ways for him to play, ways for him to get on the football field. He brings some length to our room that we don’t have. He’s a cover corner, he can cover really well for his size. He moves really well. He loves football. He’s a great kid, always smiling. He brings some stuff to the room that we want, and we want to develop him. I want him to be better next year than he is this year. I think we will find spots where he can continue to get better, and he’s shown us that so far, if he continues to keep doing that we look forward to trying to get him in the mix.”
28 Jamal Miles R-SO 6’0″ 180
Miles played in nine games last year for the Flames as a redshirt-freshman.
21 Uriah Points FR 5’10” 170
