Update 9/23: It is a patella tendon rupture to the left leg for Jonathan Bennett, he will miss the rest of the season. Surgery is required and he is expected to be out 4-6 months. Liberty is hopeful he will be back for spring practice.

“He is out for the season, which is unfortunate,” Freeze said. “We will get him ready and he will work to get back. I’ve said it many times, injuries are the most difficult part of coaching. My initial reaction was I wanted to get on him, but he was so excited for his teammate. That’s what you want in a teammate, just a freak thing that happened.”

Backup quarterback and true freshman Johnathan Bennett was injured in a freak accident. He posted on twitter after the game that he is out for the season.

Midway through the first quarter, Brandon “Pop” Robinson came in for relief of Buckshot Calvert on 2nd and goal. On Robinson’s first play of his career, he kept the ball on a quarterback keeper and toted the rock into the end zone for the touchdown.

As Robinson returned to the sideline, he was greeted by Bennett. The two jumped in the air to celebrate and as Bennett fell to the ground, his left leg gave out underneath of him. His left leg was immediately placed in an air cast as the medical cart came onto the field to take him to the locker room.

Bennett was the 2nd string quarterback and got reps in the first two games of the season. He returned to the sidelines on crutches in the 2nd quarter.

“Obviously, it does not look good when you’re in that kind of brace,” Coach Hugh Freeze said post game. “The kid is excited for one of his teammates, and he goes out to celebrate with him and that happens. That’s difficult. Disappointing for him to be injured like that, but it happens strange ways sometimes and that one was a strange way to lose one of your backup quarterbacks.”
