On Saturday, former Liberty defensive back Elijah Benton was promoted by the Cleveland Browns from the practice squad to the active roster.

Benton joins Washington’s Antonio Gandy-Golden and the LA Chargers’ Jessie Lemonier as the three Liberty alumni on active rosters this week.

Benton went undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft, but he was quickly signed as an undrafted free agent by the Browns. After a promising summer and training camp in Cleveland, Benton was cut on the final day that NFL teams had to trim their roster. He was immediately added back to the Browns’ practice squad. Benton will wear No. 48.

Benton began his career at Liberty as a walk-on, now he’s in the NFL. He played in 23 games the past two seasons since Liberty made the move to the FBS. The 6’1″ safety had 85 tackles and 1 interception in 2019.
