Conference USA 2022 Top Contenders

UTSA

Last year’s CUSA Champions, the University of Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners, are the betting favorites for 2022. The Roadrunners held off the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers and their top-ranked offense by a score of 49-41. UTSA will return key starters on offense, including quarterback Frank Harris, four offensive linemen, and a trio of wide receivers. The offense may be tasked with carrying the team as the defense lost key players at each level.

UAB

The University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers had made three consecutive CUSA Championship games prior to 2021. When you consider the football program had been disbanded for two seasons, their recent run of success is all the more impressive.

The Blazers’ stout defense will return five key starters from a unit that allowed just 23.2 points per game and ranked in the top 20 for yards per game and yards per play.

The offense may sputter out of the gate as they look to replace production at wide receiver and tight end. On the plus side, however, is the return of junior running back DeWayne McBride who racked up over 1,300 rushing yards and 13 scores while averaging 6.7 yards per carry.

Western Kentucky

Bailey Zappe absolutely tore up opposing defenses last year as his 5,967 passing yards were almost 1,100 more than runner-up Alabama QB Bryce Young. He also threw 62 touchdown passes, which paced Young by 15 scores. The problem? Zappe was selected in the fourth-round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. WKU’s top two leading receivers are both gone as well, as Jerreth Sterns was picked up as an undrafted free agent by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Mitchell Tinsley transferred to Penn State. Oh yeah, offensive coordinator Zach Kittley also left for greener pastures at Texas Tech.

How Will Conference USA Look in 2023?

If you’re getting nervous about how Liberty might perform in C-USA, fear not. The top two programs, UTSA and UAB will be joining the AAC after this season along with Charlotte, Rice, North Texas, and FAU. Liberty won’t be the only newcomers to the conference as Sam Houston, New Mexico State, and Jacksonville State will also compete in Conference USA for the first time in 2023.

For Liberty bettors looking ahead, the conference presents some additional wagering possibilities for Virginians looking to make road trips. Matchups at Buffalo and Miami (OH) in 2023 will present the opportunity to place bets on the Flames.

As for the other 2023 newcomers, New Mexico currently only allows retail betting at tribal casinos. Florida is working through legal issues with its sports betting law after it was legal for less than a month before it was pulled. Sports betting is not yet legal in Texas but is likely to be put in front of legislators in 2023, meaning placing bets at places like BetMGM Texas could be a possibility.
