As we move towards the end of October, it looks as though Coastal Carolina may run away and hide with the conference championship and auto-bid to the FCS playoffs.

Note: last week’s ranking in parenthesis.

1. (1) Coastal Carolina 7-0, 2-0

The Chanticleers were able to do what no other Big South team has been able to do since 2006, beat Liberty in Lynchburg. Coastal put an end to Liberty’s 18 game home conference win streak winning their 7th consecutive game as they start the season 7-0 and 2-0 in conference play. The top 5 ranked Chanticleers are one of the best, if not the best, Big South teams in the conference’s short football history.

2. (2) Charleston Southern 7-1, 1-0

The Buccaneers dropped their first contest of the season losing to Colorado 43-10. Charleston Southern is the only team standing in Coastal’s way of a perfect 5-0 conference season. The Buccaneers are out of conference again this week as they play host to Charlotte.

3. (3) Liberty 3-4, 0-1

The Flames dropped a heartbreaker in double overtime to Coastal Carolina after having a 19 point lead in the 3rd quarter. With Liberty’s playoff hopes virtually dashed, will they be able to rebound in time for Saturday’s road contest?

4. (4) Gardner-Webb 4-3, 0-1

After two disappointing losses to Charlotte and Coastal Carolina, the Runnin’ Bulldogs had the week off to rest and prepare for Liberty. Who will want it more?

5. (5) Presbyterian 2-4, 1-0

The Blue Hose proved it is not the worst team in the conference with an impressive win over VMI 49-35. Presbyterian led 42-21 early in the 4th quarter before the Keydets scored 2 touchdowns in garbage time.

6. (6) VMI 1-6, 0-2

The Keydets are bad, and may not win another game this season. It could get very ugly this weekend as they head down to the beach to face a fired up and undefeated Coastal Carolina squad.
