The first week of Big South play has come to a close.

Here are the updated power rankings for the conference.
Note last weeks’ rankings in (parenthesis).

  1. (1) Coastal Carolina 6-0, 1-0 *Nationally ranked #1

Last week: Presbyterian 17 Coastal 24

Coastal had their hands full on Saturday as Presbyterian wasn’t about to roll over for a loss. CCU scored on a fake field goal and had to kick three through in order to seal the win. De’Angelo Henderson keeps up his impressive year, rushing for 124 yards and scored the touchdown that kept Presbyterian out of reach. The Blue Hose had a chance to tie it up late in the 4th, but ended up turning the ball over on downs.

Next up: BYE

  1. (3) Charleston Southern 4-1, 1-0 *Nationally ranked #23

Last week: Monmouth 7 CSU 37

It was all Charleston on Saturday as Monmouth struggled to get anything going offensively and couldn’t get a stop defensively. The Buccaneers were up 37-0 before the Hawks got on the board, and that was a garbage touchdown with 2 minutes left in the game. Mike Holloway had 78 yards with 3 touchdowns to help the cause. CSU limited the Hawks to 6 first downs and 115 total yards.

Next up: @ Presbyterian, 2:00pm

  1. (2) Liberty 3-3, 0-1 *Nationally ranked 22

Last week: Liberty 20 Gardner-Webb 34

Ouch.

Next up: @ Monmouth, 1:00pm

  1. (6) Gardner-Webb 2-3, 1-0

Last week: Liberty 20 Gardner-Webb 34

It was clear Saturday night that the Runnin’ Bulldogs weren’t intimidated by #15 Liberty coming to town. Liberty’s defensive line was gashed all evening as the Bulldogs rushed for 268 yards, the most the Flames have given up this season. Tyler Maxwell created a good part of that damage as he rushed for 176 yards and 3 touchdowns. Liberty had won eight straight against Gardner-Webb.

Next up: @ Kennesaw State, 1:00pm

  1. (5) Presbyterian 1-5, 0-1

Last week: Presbyterian 17 Coastal 24

Regardless of the travel and swampy conditions, Presbyterian had their sights focused on a win against #1 Coastal Carolina….but they came up short. 40 seconds were left on the clock and the Blue Hoses found themselves in a 4th and goal situation. To their dismay, they were unable to connect for a touchdown. Darrell Bridges had a great night for Presbyterian as he rushed for 186 yards and a touchdown.

Next up: Vs. Charleston Southern, 2:00pm

  1. (4) Monmouth 2-4, 0-1

Last week: Monmouth 7 CSU 37

There is little, if anything, for the Hawks to be positive about after their loss to Charleston Southern. 46 yards passing. 69 yards rushing. 1 out of 13 on 3rd down. Monmouth has quite a bit to work on moving forward.

Next up: Vs. Liberty, 1:00pm

  1. (7) Kennesaw State 4-1, 0-0

Last week: Point 17 Kennesaw St. 56

As expected, the Owls had little trouble dealing with DII opponent Point University. Kennesaw was firing on all cylinders as they racked up over 300 yards both on the ground and through the air. At the end of the day, they accumulated an impressive 700 total yards. They will enter Big South play with coming week and finally we will be able to gage this fresh team better.

Next up: Vs. Gardner-Webb, 1:00pm

Hope you guys have a great week!
