Over the course of training camp, the media will have the opportunity to speak with all the on-field, position coaches for the Liberty Flames. Those press conferences continued earlier this week when co-DC/safeties coach Jack Curtis and defensive backs coach Darius Eubanks met with the media.

Here are a few of the main takeaways from those interview sessions:

  • Coach Curtis spoke very highly of the newcomers to the safety room – Maurice Freeman, Brylan Green, A’Khori Jones, and Jayden Sweeney. He said all of them have the opportunity to possibly play this year, and they are all competing to break into the two-deep.
  • Of Freeman, the Indiana transfer, Curtis said that he is “a size that we haven’t had back there.”
  • At safety, there is a second-string role available for Freeman or one of the three freshmen to break into.
  • Continuing the theme of takeaways that has been a hot topic among the defensive coaches, Curtis also mentioned them. He said, we’ve “been happy with the amount of takeaways, a lot of punch outs. We celebrate those, show them in team meetings, make a big deal out of them.”
  • Green was also recruited to play baseball. When asked about his two-sport prospects Curtis said, “We don’t talk any baseball right now. He’s straight, right in football. After, hopefully, a bowl game, we will see where Brylan is at and what he’s ready to do. He’s bought in 100% football. We don’t even discuss it right now. We discussed it with Coach Freeze during his recruitment, and I think that’s the last time we discussed it. We’re all about football right now.”
  • The current starting safeties are Javon Scruggs, Quentin Reese, and Rocket Rahimi.
  • After spending his first year in the program as a second-string player, Curtis said he is expecting Rahimi to have a a breakout year this year.
  • Curtis: “I talk to Coach Burns all the time. We’ve got depth. I said, ‘Let’s make sure our best players are out there on the special teams. Let’s not shy away from playing them.’ We don’t need to save anybody. We’ve got a little bit of depth. Let’s put the best guys on the field that are going to help us win ball games.”
  • With Curtis and Josh Aldridge taking offer as co-defensive coordinators from Scott Symons who has moved on to SMU, Curtis says there will be some scheme changes on defense but also some of the same things that have been done in the past few seasons.
  • Coach Eubanks was high on his room saying, “there’s a lot of good players in that room.” Like safety, there are several young players at corner including Amarian Williams, Dexter Ricks, and Antwon Jackson.
  • Transfers Kobe Singleton and Preston Hodge have both meshed with their new teammates well and should be able to make an impact on the field this fall.

Look for much more on the safeties and corners in the coming days as part of our position previews. Also, keep an eye out for additional details from the other assistant coaches throughout camp.
