Liberty opens the Division I portion of their schedule Monday night in the Vines Center against CAA foe Delaware. Here’s what you need to know about the Blue Hens:

1. This is Delaware’s season opener.

Delaware head coach Monte Ross

The Blue Hens will tip off defense of their CAA championship on the road.

2. The Blue Hens won the CAA last season, advancing to the NCAA Tournament.

Delaware won 19 of their final 22 games last year en route to the CAA championship and a record of 25-10 overall and 14-2 in CAA play. The Blue Hens lost to 4 seed Michigan State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament 93-78.

3. Liberty lost to Delaware, 77-64, last season. gielo1

The game was played in Delaware, and began a Blue Hens streak of 13 straight wins. Tomasz Gielo led the Flames with 16 points and 7 rebounds.

4. Delaware must replace their “big 3” from last season.

Devon Saddler, Davon Usher, and Jarvis Threatt all averaged at least 18 points per game, and all are gone. Saddler leaves as Delaware’s all-time leading scorer with 2,222 career points.

5. Jarvis Threatt was kicked off the team in early June for violations of team rules.

Threatt averaged 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists per game last season and was the CAA Tournament MVP.

6. The Blue Hens return one starter in Kyle Anderson.

Anderson started all 35 games last season and averaged 11 points per game. He needs to make just 14 more 3-pointers to become Delaware’s all-time leader in 3-point field goals made for a career. Anderson has broken his hand and will miss the game against Liberty.

7. After winning the conference last year, Delaware is picked to finish 8th out of 10 teams in the CAA.
