The Flames begin spring practice today, and here are 5 positions worth watching:

Quarterback

This is the one position battle which will get plenty of discussion all off-season. We’ve already introduced The Search which we will update during spring ball as Stephon Masha and Rudiger Yearick go head-to-head. The battle will get a boost of adrenaline this summer when Buckshot Calvert joins the fray.

Offensive Line

The front line returns a total of 55 career starts among Tanner Hartman, Aharown Campbell, Michael Henderman, and Lucas Holder. Will Gregg Storey, Dontae Duff, and Ben Fiordelise prove worthy of considerable playing time? Will anyone else step up?

combined starts return on O-line

James was 2nd on team with 71 tackles in 2015

Safety

For the 2nd straight year, the Flames have an unexpected departure from an expected leader at safety. This time it’s Avery James who was dismissed from the team. Corbin and Cam Jackson alongside Alpha Jalloh all return with valuable experience. JUCO transfer Solomon McGinty is also on campus and will compete during the spring.

Kicker

Whoever ends up the starter on September 3rd in Blacksburg will have enormous shoes to fill as Liberty moves on in the post-John Lunsford era. For the spring, the Flames don’t even have a kicker listed on the roster. Obviously, Alex Probert will have say in this battle when he arrives in the summer

Running Back

In Coach Gill’s tenure at Liberty, he’s always featured 2 backs. First it was Aldreakis Allen and Sirchauncey Holloway. Then Des Rice and D.J. Abnar. Todd Macon, with career numbers of 569 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, will be the starter. Who will join him? Carrington Mosley is the only other back that has seen game action (3 games, 5 career rushes). Frankie Hickson and Denvre Daniels have the talent, will it carry over?
