Emotions ran high during last season’s UR-LU showdown

Homecoming. October 4th. Under the lights. Danny Rocco returns. It’s #4 on our list of storylines entering the 2014 season.

Liberty was the first place to offer him a head coaching opportunity. He called this place home for 6 years. The last time Rocco coached at Williams Stadium, he was walking off the field a victor 37-31 over VMI on November 5th, 2011. He has a 30-5 all-time record here.

This time, though, will be different. For the first time, Rocco will be coaching from the visiting sideline of Williams Stadium, in front of the raucous student body, where will lead his team onto the field from the visitor’s locker room. That raucous student body? He was the chief architect of it nearly 10 years ago.

All of that is before we even get to the game. The rematch of the rain-soaked Richmond 30-21 win a year ago. A game that could make or break Liberty’s at-large chances. A potential top-25 matchup. The return of Michael Rocco who dazzled the William Stadiums turf under the Friday night lights at LCA just a few years ago.

But, no, none of that matters. This game is all about Liberty and Danny Rocco. The Flames, in front of 20,000 fans, trying to keep their former leader from ruining homecoming weekend. I can hardly wait.
