We have finally reached #1 on our countdown of the top 10 storylines surrounding Liberty football entering the 2013 season. Today we take a look at Liberty’s home conference win streak.

Liberty celebrates its win over #6 Stony Brook to extend its home conference win streak to 18

Eighteen consecutive home conference wins. Eighteen! The streak dates back to 2006 when former head coach Danny Rocco took over. Liberty’s last home conference loss was October 21, 2006 when the Flames fell 27-24 to Gardner-Webb. That is six consecutive seasons without a home conference loss. The Flames have beaten Charleston Southern 4 times, Coastal, VMI, Stony Brook, and Gardner-Webb 3 times each, and Presbyterian twice. Liberty has defeated 3 ranked teams during this streak including its last home conference game against #6 Stony Brook where the Flames won 28-14. Charleston Southern came in ranked #24 and 9-0 in 2006; Liberty beat the Buccaneers 34-20 to get the streak started. The Flames also defeated #20 Coastal Carolina 63-27 in 2011. And who could forget the 42-35 win over Gardner-Webb in 2012? The Flames over came deficits of 21-3 and 28-10 to give Turner Gill his first win at Liberty.

The streak will be tested next during homecoming weekend against Coastal Carolina on October 19th. With a win, the Flames will put the streak on the line against VMI on November 9th and again on November 16th against Presbyterian. If Liberty wins all 3 of those games to extend its streak to 21 games, the Flames will likely advance to the FCS playoffs for the first time in school history.
