Since losses in the last 2 games have virtually eliminated Liberty from any at-large possibilities this season, there has been chatter of this week’s Appalachian State game not mattering. If that’s your thought, you’re wrong, and here’s why:

1. It’s the next game.

gill1I know, typical coach speak, but it is true. And let’s face it, in July we will be wishing we had another football game to talk about.

2. A 3 game losing streak could be demoralizing.

urLiberty hasn’t lost 3 straight since the Flames dropped their first 4 games of 2012 in Gill’s first season. Before that you have to go back to 2006, Danny Rocco’s first season. Losing 3 straight could kill the team’s confidence, while a win would be huge especially entering a bye week.

3. To make a statement to the Sun Belt.

App State’s Chancellor with SBC commissioner Karl Benson

We all know the story. The Sun Belt has passed on Liberty for 2 straight years, and this is the first shot the Flames have to prove on the field that they belong.

4. To build momentum entering conference play.

This is the last non-conference game of the season before LU enters the 5 game Big South slate. And the Big South is as good, from top to bottom, as it has ever been.

5. Playoff possibilities.

olWait, didn’t we already say Liberty has no shot at an at-large? While that’s likely true, there’s still a lot of football to be played. Who knows what will happen across the country that could help LU’s playoff chances? Win this game and the Flames have a shot at the end of the year if they are 8-4 and hoping for an at large bid.

6. It’s our Super Bowl.

At least according to some folks over at yosefscabin.com. “Liberty has had this game circled for months. This is their Super Bowl. This is their statement to the Sun Belt. They are expecting to come to Boone and win convincingly.”
