Over the past ten spring practice notebooks we’ve had a very optimistic approach to what the Flames are doing this season. Though it was a productive period, after Thursday’s practice it’s time to look and see what we will need to work on for next fall. Here is our roundup for the defensive side of the ball.

Defensive Line
This group has a lot of potential next season, with a couple leaders, and some talented underclassmen. They looked great at the spring game, but have been inconsistent throughout spring football. They must work on recognizing screens and other blocking schemes. There is also a lack of depth, but some of the younger guys are starting to come around.

Linebackers
The linebackers have been solid all spring season. They are athletic enough to drop into coverage, but can also swarm in the run game. There are sometimes badly fooled when they become overly aggressive, but more practice should hone that aggression in a positive way. Look for the Nick Sigmon led crew to be a highlight of the defense.

Defensive Backs
There is so much depth at defensive back this season, and that combined with good leadership, this group will make quite an impact. They play great tight coverage, but have been getting beat deep once or twice every practice. No doubt this is a solid group, but getting fooled one or two times can be the difference in a ballgame. Luckily, this is a hard working and reliable group, and will anchor the conference’s most solid defense, once these small mistakes are corrected.

This defense could be one of the most talented in Liberty’s recent history.
