Liberty lost to Jacksonville State in the CUSA opener, 34-24, this past Saturday. Here’s how the team graded out.
Quarterbacks: C+
- Vasko started the game with a turnover on the second offensive play of the game. He then had an interception later in the first half, and nearly threw another one just before halftime on a pass that hit the defender in the shoulder pad. There was also a miscommunication on the 4th and 2 play, not sure who to fault there the QB or RB. In the end, Vasko did finish with a nice stat line – 19 of 29 for 335 yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 interception. Have to reduce the mistakes.
Running Backs: B
- The Flames finished with 37 rushes for 199 yards and a touchdown, good for 5.4 yards per carry. That’s a pretty solid line. Evan Dickens had 13 rushes for 114 yards to lead the way. Juju Gray also had a 72-yard touchdown reception.
Wide Receivers/Tight Ends: A
- The receivers look like they have taken a step forward so far this season. No drops at Jax State. Six different receivers/tight ends caught at least one pass.
Offensive Line: C
- Gave up pressure. Run blocking was solid but not overpowering. Improvement needed.
Run Defense: D-
- The Flames allowed 338 rushing yards against a team that did not want to or really even attempt to pass the ball.
Pass Defense: A
- Jax State was held to 52 passing yards, only completing 6 of 12. Coverage was solid for the most part when the Gamecocks attempted passes downfield.
Special Teams: D
- Missed field goal of 27 yards. Poor decision making on the kick return game. Kickoff that went out of bounds in a key situation in the 4th quarter with the game in the balance.
