Football home opener

Liberty is set to open Williams Stadium this weekend against Monmouth. The Flames had won 9 consecutive home openers prior to last season’s loss to Norfolk State. This is Liberty’s 25th season playing inside of Williams Stadium, and the Flames sport a 89-43 overall record in the on-campus facility.

This will be the 1st meeting between the 2 schools, but they should get to know each other well in the next few years as Monmouth is set to join the Big South as an associate member for football beginning in 2014. Liberty and Monmouth will face each other again next year at Williams Stadium.

Running back DJ Abnar is suspended for the 1st half against Monmouth due to a violation of team rules, and true freshman offensive lineman Kris Wilson has been declared academically ineligible and is not on the team this year. Both of these items were reported by Chris Lang of the News Advance on Thursday. Abnar is a reserve running back and starting kick returner alongside Kevin Fogg. Running back Clifton Richardson will replace Abnar as a kick returner during the 1st half. Wilson was one of Liberty’s highest rated offensive line recruits in the class of 2013. He had reported offers from Illinois, Virginia, Old Dominion, and James Madison.

The Flames are a 12.5 point favorite according to 5dimes.
