Liberty women’s basketball opened its 2026-27 season in impressive fashion Monday night, overwhelming Frostburg State, 73-30, at Liberty Arena.

The Lady Flames (1-0) relied on their defensive intensity and size advantage to control the contest, holding the Bobcats to just 30 points while finishing the game on a dominant 32-0 run. Liberty never trailed and secured its fourth consecutive season-opening victory. The result also marked Liberty’s lowest-scoring defensive performance allowed since holding Randolph to 26 points in December 2024.

Liberty established control early, jumping out to a 10-0 lead before Frostburg State settled into the game. The Bobcats managed to remain competitive for much of the first three quarters, but the Lady Flames eventually turned the matchup into a defensive showcase. Frostburg State shot just 22.6% from the field, connecting on 12 of 53 attempts. The Bobcats also committed 26 turnovers, which Liberty converted into 34 points. The Lady Flames finished with 15 steals and five blocks, consistently disrupting Frostburg’s offensive rhythm.

Liberty’s defensive effort reached another level late in the third quarter. After Frostburg State trimmed the deficit to 41-30 with 4:15 remaining in the period, Lynn Peters answered with a layup to spark the decisive run. The Bobcats would not score again. Liberty held Frostburg State without a point for the remainder of the contest, closing the game with a 32-0 run. The Bobcats missed all 13 of their remaining field goal attempts while committing 12 turnovers during the stretch.

Sophia Gregory and Emmy Stout paced the Lady Flames with 14 points apiece in the season opener. Gregory made an immediate impact in her Liberty debut, adding nine rebounds, three assists and three steals while shooting 6-of-7 from the field. The reigning Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year demonstrated her ability to contribute on both ends of the floor. Stout also delivered a strong performance, scoring 10 of her 14 points after halftime. Her performance marked her fourth consecutive game scoring in double figures dating back to last season.

Ify Nwaobi added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds while recording five blocks, tying her career high. Nwaobi’s presence inside helped Liberty establish a commanding advantage in the paint. JaKayla Thompson contributed nine points, making all five of her free-throw attempts.

Liberty’s newcomers also made their presence felt. Freshmen Trinity Holsinger and Kendyl Smith each scored their first collegiate points, while Smith recorded four steals in an impressive defensive debut.

Liberty’s size advantage was evident throughout the contest, particularly on the boards and around the basket. The Lady Flames outrebounded Frostburg State 54-30 and outscored the Bobcats 48-14 in the paint. Liberty also received 22 points from its bench compared to just five for Frostburg State.

Despite struggling from beyond the arc, with both teams shooting 16.7% from three-point range, Liberty found plenty of success attacking inside and generating opportunities through its defense. The Lady Flames finished shooting 42.6% from the field and recorded 18 assists while committing 17 turnovers.

Liberty will now turn its attention to a challenging stretch of road games in North Carolina. The Lady Flames begin that stretch Saturday with a 5 p.m. matchup against East Carolina. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Monday’s performance provided an encouraging start for Liberty, particularly with its defensive intensity and contributions from newcomers. While the Lady Flames will look to improve their shooting efficiency, their ability to dominate defensively and control the paint gives them a strong foundation heading into the early portion of the season. The season is just beginning, but Liberty’s opening-night defensive performance offered an early glimpse of what this team could become.
