The Liberty Flames will open the 2026 football season on Saturday, heading to Harrisonburg to take on James Madison as a 6.5-point underdog.
The current consensus line has the Dukes favored by 6.5 points, with the over/under sitting around 52.5 points. Liberty’s moneyline is approximately +200, while JMU sits around -245. The matchup is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 5, at Bridgeforth Stadium, with kickoff listed for noon ET.
Under Jamey Chadwell, Liberty is 0-5 straight up when listed as an underdog and 1-4 against the spread. Their lone cover came last season at Old Dominion, where Liberty lost 21-7 but entered the game as a 14.5-point underdog.
For Liberty, the season opener represents an immediate test against a JMU program that enters 2026 with plenty of momentum. The Dukes went 11-1 during the 2025 regular season, won the Sun Belt Championship and earned a spot in the College Football Playoff.
But this isn’t the same JMU team that Liberty faced last season.
The Dukes lost quarterback Alonza Barnett III and running back Wayne Knight, while former head coach Bob Chesney left for UCLA. Former Florida head coach Billy Napier now leads the program. JMU is also breaking in a new quarterback, with JC Evans and former Richmond quarterback Camden Coleman competing for the starting job.
That turnover creates an interesting opportunity for the Flames.
JMU’s defense was outstanding last season, ranking fifth nationally in total defense at 266.6 yards per game and 13th in scoring defense at 18.4 points per game. Despite losing some key pieces, the Dukes are still expected to have one of the better defenses in the Sun Belt.
Meanwhile, Liberty enters the season with plenty of questions of its own, particularly at quarterback. The Flames have spent the offseason sorting through a competition that includes Ethan Vasko, Deshawn Purdie, Jaylen Henderson, and Jachin Davis.
A six-and-a-half-point spread essentially says oddsmakers expect JMU to win by about a touchdown. Historically, games with a home favorite of 5.5 to 7.5 points have been competitive against the spread, with the favorite covering 55.8% of the time since 2021.
Liberty also knows firsthand how difficult JMU can be. The Dukes defeated the Flames 31-13 in Lynchburg last September, covering as 7.5-point favorites.
Liberty gets a chance to make an immediate statement under new circumstances, while JMU begins the season with a target on its back and significant turnover from the team that reached the CFP.
For the Flames, they don’t necessarily need to win by four touchdowns to make a statement. A competitive game in Harrisonburg could immediately change the perception surrounding Liberty’s 2026 season.
And if the Flames can find a way to leave Bridgeforth Stadium with a victory? The 6.5-point spread will be remembered as little more than a number that underestimated them. For a Liberty team with plenty to prove, the season opener couldn’t offer a much better opportunity.
