As news of Liberty making alterations to future football schedules continues to filter out as the Flames make plans to join Conference USA beginning with the 2023 football season, we have also learned of additional games added to the Liberty-Old Dominion series. These two additional games were agreed to this past fall prior to Liberty officially joining CUSA.

The new agreement adds a game in Norfolk, Virginia on October 4, 2025 and in Lynchburg, Virginia on September 30, 2028 according to a copy of the contract received by ASOR in a FOIA request. Each home team will pay the visiting team $175,000 for the game, the contract states. Liberty was previously scheduled to play at Georgia Southern on October 4, 2025. Georgia Southern currently has that game against the Flames in 2025 listed for Oct. 25.

The Flames and Monarchs have become regular fixtures on each other’s schedules since Liberty joining the in-state opponent at the FBS level. The two teams played on September 1, 2018 in Liberty’s first ever game as an FBS team, with the Flames winning 52-10. They once again played this past season, with Liberty winning 45-17 in a game played at Williams Stadium in Lynchburg.

Liberty is scheduled to travel to Norfolk this coming fall as the Flames and Monarchs meet on October 1. The other game scheduled between these two schools is on Sept. 30, 2023 in Lynchburg.

While the Flames will be making the move to Conference USA for the 2023 campaign, the Monarchs are moving from CUSA to the Sun Belt. They will be joined in their new conference home by fellow Commonwealth school James Madison. The Dukes announced on Tuesday they will begin making the transition to the FBS level and compete in their new conference home beginning with the 2022 season.

In recent weeks, it has also been discovered that Liberty and Ball State also added a pair of games for the 2030 and 2031 season prior to the Flames joining CUSA. Also, Liberty has had games against Miami (Ohio) and Virginia canceled as the Flames continue to whittle down it’s non-conference schedules from as many as 12 games to fit the new model with four conference games in Conference USA.
