On Saturday morning, Liberty concluded its 2022 training camp with an open scrimmage as part of Fan Appreciation Day held at Williams Stadium. It was the first extended look at the team through training camp as the team will take Sunday and Monday off before beginning preparation for the Sept. 3 season opener at Southern Miss in earnest on Tuesday.

Here are some of the main takeaways from Saturday’s approximately two hour scrimmage:

A few notable names did not participate in the scrimmage including RBs TJ Green and Malik Caper, TE Jerome Jackson, and DT Dennis Osagiede. There is no word to this point on Green’s status, as he could have been injured earlier this week during practice. Caper suffered an ankle injury earlier during camp. Jackson was on the sidelines and dressed, but did not participate in the scrimmage. Osagiede was pushing for first team reps but did not participate in the scrimmage.

Perhaps due to the absence of Green and Caper at running back, wide receiver Treon Sibley went through drills and lined up at running back during on Saturday. He originally came to Liberty as a running back before being moved to wide receiver. We will have to wait and see if this is a permanent move or just temporary due to injury.

Note: ball carriers were whistled down when they were wrapped up (or touched in the instance of QBs).

QUARTERBACKS

Charlie Brewer got the start and Johnathan Bennett worked with the second team. These two got the bulk of the work, especially early during the scrimmage. Brewer looked poised and confident while Bennett struggled most of the morning session.

Redshirt-freshmen Kaidon Salter and Nate Hampton also got their fair share of work, and both looked good and showed flashes.

During the scrimmage, the offense started their drives at various points. Some started at their own two yard line, others at their own 30 or 40 yard line, and there were also several drives that the offense started at or near the red zone. Just something to keep in mind especially as we track the quarterback’s drives.

Charlie Brewer’s drives resulted in a field goal, touchdown, field goal, and field goal.

Jonathan Bennett’s drives resulted in a three & out, three & out, three & out (offense hurt due to a holding penalty), field goal (with first team offense), three & out, interception, and a field goal.
