Taelon Peter’s path to the NBA has included plenty of detours. His next stop will be San Antonio.
Peter, the former Liberty guard who spent his rookie season with the Indiana Pacers, has agreed to a training-camp deal with the San Antonio Spurs, according to a report from HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto. The agreement gives Peter another opportunity to compete for an NBA roster spot after Indiana waived him following the NBA Summer League.
Peter, 24, was selected by the Pacers with the 54th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft after a breakout season at Liberty. He signed a two-way contract with Indiana and appeared in 38 games during the 2025-26 season, averaging 4.5 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 12.6 minutes per game. He shot 32.8% from 3-point range as a rookie.
Peter’s road to the NBA was anything but conventional. The Russellville, Arkansas, native began his college career at Tennessee Tech before transferring to Arkansas Tech. At the Division II school, Peter developed into one of the top players in the Great American Conference. As a senior in 2023-24, he averaged 18.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game and was named the conference’s Player of the Year.
That performance earned Peter an opportunity at Liberty, where he quickly established himself as one of the Flames’ most efficient offensive players. In his lone season at Liberty, Peter averaged 13.7 points and 4.0 rebounds while shooting 45.3% from 3-point range. He was named Conference USA Sixth Man of the Year and earned third-team All-Conference USA honors. His shooting and efficiency ultimately helped turn him into an NBA prospect.
Now, he will have another chance to prove he can stick in the league.
Peter’s contract with San Antonio is an Exhibit 10 deal, meaning the training-camp invitation does not guarantee him a spot on the Spurs’ regular-season roster. He will compete with other players during training camp and the preseason for an opportunity to remain with the organization.
The Spurs are in the midst of building around a young core, making the competition for roster spots particularly important as the team prepares for the 2026-27 season. Peter brings NBA experience, positional versatility and a proven track record as a perimeter shooter. There is also a local connection to his new organization. Peter grew up in Russellville, Arkansas, the same hometown as Spurs assistant coach Corliss Williamson.
For Peter, though, the significance of the opportunity goes beyond the hometown connection.
A year after helping Liberty win games in Conference USA, Peter was drafted into the NBA. After spending his rookie season in Indiana, he now has another chance to establish himself at basketball’s highest level. The journey that began at Tennessee Tech, continued through Arkansas Tech and Liberty, and eventually led to the NBA now has another chapter.
This time, it will be written in San Antonio.
