Liberty picked up its first non-conference road win since December 31, 2012 with a 79-66 win over Wake Forest, snapping a streak of 22 consecutive losses. It’s the Flames first win over an ACC opponent since Liberty knocked off Virginia on November 25th, 2008 during Coach McKay’s first stint at Liberty.

The Flames used a 10-0 run late in the first half to take a 9 point lead into the break at 34-25, and Liberty maintained their lead throughout the remainder of the game.

Lovell Cabbil got off to a great start with 10 early points to keep the Flames close at the beginning of the game. After picking up 2 early fouls, Cabbil was limited to 9 minutes in the first stanza. He went on to finish the game with 22 points including a perfect 8/8 from the charity stripe. The junior guard also added 7 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 blocks.

Redshirt-sophomore Scottie James was a difference maker on both ends of the floor. He nearly recorded a double-double as the Bradley transfer finished with 9 points and 14 rebounds, while also adding 4 blocks and 3 assists.

After missing his first shot of the night, Ryan Kemrite made 4 straight 3 pointers and went on to finish with 17 points. Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 points.

True freshman Keegan McDowell hit a huge 3 pointer to make it 66-56 with 2:30 left to put the game out of reach.

Liberty won the game despite 15 turnovers thanks in part to out-rebounding Wake Forest 39-28 including 9 offensive boards. The Flames led for more than 30 minutes of game action and were an impressive 20/23 (87%) from the free throw line.

The Flames and Demon Deacons will now head to Lynchburg to compete in the 3 day Paradise Jam beginning Friday at noon with Mercer facing Liberty.
