Liberty picked up a win on Tuesday night, defeating Jacksonville Statex, 31-13, to move to 6-0 on the season and 4-0 in CUSA play. Following the win, head coach Jamey Chadwell met with the media. Here is everything he had to say following the game, beginning with his opening statement:

“It’s a great checkpoint for us (being bowl eligible). Obviously, now we’re in a conference. Our mountain is still to climb. It’s awesome for our team to be 6-0 and to be bowl eligible. We are excited about that. More importantly we move to 4-0 in the league which is awesome with 4 to go. Excited about that. It was a great celebration.”

“This was a quick turnaround. This is a hard place to play. They are playing with a lot of confidence. We were able to physically do a great job. We challenged our guys that we had to be physical on both sides of the ball. We were able to do that and pull away in the fourth quarter.

IT ALMOST FELT LIKE A TALE OF TWO HALVES, ON OFFENSE IT FELT LIKE YOU JUST HAD TO STICK WITH IT?

“We came out and had a plan. They changed up a little bit on us there the first couple of drives and we didn’t maybe execute the way we wanted to. Maybe we were a little excited, a little nervous. We did a big job to get us emotionally ready. By that third drive, we started figuring out what we wanted to do. The first half was a little ugly there, but in the second half I think we finished about every drive with some type of touchdown or whatever we needed to do. I thought we really made some good adjustments when we needed to. Our goal was to keep them off the field. I don’t know what the time of possession was but it was nice.”

KAIDON SALTER 4/12 IN THE FIRST HALF, 2ND HALF 8/9, WHAT ADJUSTMENTS DID HE MAKE?

“As I said, they did some things there. I don’t know if we were helping him out as much with some of the calls we needed to get into. We needed to help him just get into the flow of the game. I think he gets so jacked up. He wants to do so well and sometimes he won’t let the game come to him, he tries to take it. Got him calmed down and put him in positions there in the second half to make some nice plays. He really did a nice job.”

HOW ABOUT THE NIGHT FOR JOE CARTER ON DEFENSE?

“Joe is awesome. We call him the Super Freak because he looks like Rick James. For you young people, you don’t know who he is. Older guys will get it, he looks like Rick James. Here’s the thing about Joe, Joe obviously walked on, earned a scholarship. He just does his job over and over. He’s one of those guys that epitomizes, if you want to know what we want a Flame to be in our program, he epitomizes that. He does his job. He never complains. He always finds away out how to do things. Proud of that man. He’s awesome. Whenever football is done for him, I will not be surprised if he is doing unbelievable stuff wherever he is because he is a special young man. Thankful to get to coach him.”

INTERCEPTION BY BRYLAN GREEN AT THE END OF THE 1ST HALF, HOW BIG WAS THAT?

“It was huge. We knew they were getting the ball out of the half. If they score there, then get the ball, could have changed the whole game. We were driving to try to score and we fumbled. Huge play. I think he’s a centerfielder. Coach Jackson, he needs to be a centerfielder, no doubt. I don’t know where he played, but he’s been great back there. That was a big play. You look back and you think there are a lot of plays but that was a huge one to quell their momentum, let us get in the locker room and regroup. We scored 21 points in the 2nd half and they scored 3.”

QUINTON COOLEY WITH 150 YARDS RUSHING, HOW GREAT IS IT TO HAVE A GUY LIKE THAT?

“I wasn’t going to kick the field goal (at the end). We are playing to win the game. We want to win. I kick the field goal, we go up two touchdowns, they still got a chance to block it. We are playing to win. Two things, I trust our O-Line, I trust us to get a push, but I also trust the defense to make a play when they need to. The thing that I love about Quinton, he got stronger as the game went on. Those tackles for 3 yards there in the second half, started to get 6, 7, 8. Proud of him.”
