Former Liberty wide receiver Demario Douglas made an impact in more ways than one Sunday, helping the New England Patriots secure a 26-19 win over the New York Jets.
Douglas finished with a team-high 86 receiving yards on seven receptions, including a nine-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Drake Maye with 14 seconds remaining in the first half. The touchdown helped the Patriots take a 17-3 lead into halftime.
However, Douglas’ biggest play came in the closing seconds.
After the Jets pulled within 26-19 on a 36-yard field goal with 32 seconds remaining, New York attempted an onside kick to try to get the ball back. The kick appeared to be headed toward Jets players after bouncing off the hands of Patriots wide receiver A.J. Brown, but Douglas recovered the loose ball to preserve New England’s possession and secure the victory.
The performance marked Douglas’ second consecutive strong outing after he recorded four receptions for 65 yards and two touchdowns in the Patriots’ 45-17 win over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5. Through six games, Douglas has totaled 20 receptions for 233 yards and three touchdowns. New England has won three straight games to improve to 4-2 on the season.
The Patriots return to action Thursday night when they travel to Chicago to face the Bears at 8:15 p.m. on Prime Video.
