Flames and Eagles fans, alike, were glued to one incredible performance on Saturday as Darius McGhee went absolutely unconscious. The game against FGCU serves as an exciting landmark for an ever-growing program. Darius will not soon be forgotten when he chooses to exit the college basketball scene, and his jaw-dropping scoring exhibition might just push him into some serious NBA consideration.

Here are three things that stood out to me from Saturday’s game.

1. The silent second-half killer.

Darius had an impressive first half. Eleven points in one-half is not anything to ignore. Most players don’t even consistently score double digits, but Flames’ fans have become so accustomed to his scoring onslaughts it’s easy to overlook. However…37 points in one half at any level is simply exceptional. That simple split shows just how much Darius was able to take the game over for the Flames.

2. Darius shot efficiently from everywhere.

Here is the breakdown – Darius was 16 for 25 from the field, 8 for 14 from three-point range, and perfect from the line (8 for 8). So, that’s 64 percent from the field and 57 percent from three. To put it in perspective, Baylor’s Kendall Brown holds the highest field goal percentage on the season at 67.3 percent (per ESPN). However, Brown has only taken 100 shots on the season. Darius has taken 297 shots. All of that to say, 48 points on 64 percent shooting just proves how accurately Darius was calibrated Saturday night.[1]

3. Tight handle and smart decisions.

Darius only had two turnovers in 38 minutes of play on Saturday. He is a slashing shot creator, so for him to score 48 points on any given night means he was handling the ball for a high percentage of the game. The low turnovers can likely be linked to the efficient shooting, showing Darius was intentional and calculated on basically every possession. That kind of focus is next-level.

Hopefully, Darius is just teasing fans as to what he can accomplish in at least six more weeks of play. What a joy it would be if Darius sets the college basketball world aflame in March.
