On Thursday, Liberty officially suffered its first casualty to the 2020 football schedule amid the COVID-19 pandemic as the MEAC canceled all fall sports. The Flames were scheduled to open its home schedule on Sept. 12 against MEAC member North Carolina A&T.

According to multiple reports, the CAA will become the fourth FCS football conference to cancel the 2020 season (joining the MEAC, Patriot, and Ivy League), with an announcement expected Friday. However, the CAA news comes with a big caveat if you’re a Liberty football fan.

The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach is reporting that the CAA will not have any conference games scheduled but teams who want to play an independent schedule can try to do so. It will be incredibly challenging for an FCS team to pull off a completely revamped schedule in less than two months, but some will certainly try.

In fact, one league member has already reached out to Liberty about scheduling a game, source says.

The CAA is home to in-state teams James Madison, Richmond, and William & Mary. The Flames recently scheduled a game with JMU for 2026. Just last season, Liberty faced CAA member Maine, with LU coming out on top, 59-44. Other CAA members include former Big South rival Stony Brook, Albany, Villanova, New Hampshire, Towson, Elon, Delaware, and Rhode Island.

Greg Madia is reporting that JMU will attempt to build out a schedule and play a 2020 season.
