Another regular season is in the books, and we have another tie atop the Big South Football standings. Liberty and Coastal are co-champions with the Chanticleers claiming the Big South auto-bid due to their head-to-head win over the Flames back in October.

Note: last week’s ranking in parenthesis.

1. (1) Coastal Carolina 10-2, 4-1

The Chanticleers advance to the playoffs again. Stony Brook (now of the CAA) is the only Big South team other than Coastal to ever reach the FCS playoffs. The Chants are making their 4th appearance. Coastal did conclude their regular season with a 70-10 loss to South Carolina, but they will continue their season  this Saturday with a home contest against Bethune-Cookman. The Wildcats finished the regular season 10-2 and champions of the MEAC.

Next: vs Bethune-Cookman (FCS playoffs)

2. (3) Liberty 8-4, 4-1

Another season has come and gone, and the Liberty Flames are again on the outside looking in on the FCS playoffs. The Flames conclude their season on a 5 game winning streak including a 56-14 stomping of the previously 16th ranked Charleston Southern Buccaneers. The 8 wins tie a season high for wins in a season for Turner Gill. He also led Buffalo to 8 wins in 2008.

3. (2) Charleston Southern 10-3, 3-2

It may have been the school’s best season ever, but it will end on a sour note as Charleston Southern was destroyed by Liberty 56-14. The Buccaneers end the season on a 2-game losing streak, but many will look back on Jamey Chadwell’s first season as a huge success. Can t hey build off it as they look towards 2014?

4. (4) Gardner-Webb 7-5, 2-3

The Runnin’ Bulldogs finish with a winning record after beating Presbyterian 20-13 to conclude the season. Gardner-Webb’s season started with such promise after multiple top 25 victories, then they had a midseason slump where they lost 4 out of 5 games. GWU finishes the season with 2 consecutive victories over Charleston Southern and the Blue Hose.

5. (5) Presbyterian 3-8, 1-4

Will Presby ever make any progress at the Division I level? Every time it seems they are ready to turn the corner, they end up with a 3 or 4 win season. The Blue Hose finish their season with a 20-13 home loss to Gardner-Webb.

6. (6) VMI 2-10, 1-4

The Keydets conclude their final season in the Big South at 2-10 and just 1 Division I win. Enjoy life in the SoCon.
