Updated Week 10 Power Rankings after the first week of conference play. All rankings in parenthesis are KenPom.com rankings. Records are now Big South Conference records only, as that’s all that matters for the next month or two.

1. (#167)Gardner-Webb (1-1)
Last week’s results:
L, 93-81 Campbell 3OT
W, 78-71 UNC Asheville

This week:

  • 1/12 @ High Point 7pm
  • 1/16 vs Coastal Carolina 7pm

Campbell and Gardner-Webb in the game of the week, no probably the game of the year, in Buies Creek. The Bulldogs also had an impressive performance at home over Asheville. They do just enough to hang on to the #1 spot in the South, for now.

2. (#206)Coastal Carolina (2-0)
Last week’s results:
W, 80-72 Longwood
W, 61-43 Presbyterian

This week:

  • 1/12 @ Liberty 6pm
  • 1/16 @ Gardner-Webb 7pm

The Chanticleers did what they were supposed to do in beating the Lancers in Longwood’s first ever Division I conference game and taking care of Presbyterian at home. 2 road tests this week to see what Cliff Ellis’ bunch is really all about. Looking forward to the Gardner-Webb match-up.

3. (#127)UNC Asheville (1-1)
Last week’s results:
W, 83-69 Liberty
L, 78-71 Gardner-Webb

This week:

  • 1/12 vs Radford 2pm
  • 1/16 @ Charleston Southern 7:30

Asheville turned it on the last 25 minutes to pick up the road victory over Liberty. After a sluggish start against the Runnin’ Bulldogs, Asheville was unable to dig themselves out of their early hole.

4. (#158)Charleston Southern (2-0)
Last week’s results:
W, 81-74 Radford
W, 75-63 Winthrop

This week:

  • 1/12 @ Longwood 2pm
  • 1/16 vs UNC-Asheville 7:30

Any road win is good, especially in conference play, as the Buccaneers knock off the Highs. It used to be any win over Winthrop was a great win, not so much anymore.

5. (#250)Winthrop (0-2)

L, 74-61 High Point
L, 75-63 Charleston Southern

A disappointing start to conference play for Pat Kelsey & Winthrop as they lose at home to John Brown and High Point and fall on the road to the Buccaneers.

This week:

  • 1/12 vs Winthrop 1pm
  • 1/16 vs Campbell 7pm

Stan Okoye looking to claim the Big South Player of the Year honor after being named Preseason-Player of the Year. He’s off to a good start. A showdown with Campbell looms.

2. (#247)Campbell (2-0)
Last week’s results:
W, 93-81 Gardner-Webb 3OT
W, 83-73 Longwood

This week:

  • 1/12 @ Presbyterian 7:30
  • 1/16 @ VMI 7pm

Darren White was held to 16 points in a triple overtime game and Campbell still wins. Then they follow that up with a road win over Longwood without White in the lineup. A good sign for the Camels.

The Flames came out against Asheville looking like their non-conference slate was just a tune-up. The 2nd half proved otherwise. The slate doesn’t get any easier this week for Liberty.
