Over the course of training camp, the media will have the opportunity to speak with all the on-field, position coaches for the Liberty Flames. Those press conferences continued earlier this week when wide receivers coach Maurice Harris and running backs coach Bruce Johnson met with the media.

Here are a few of the main takeaways from those interview sessions:

  • Coach Harris described the play of the wide receivers throughout camp as “steady.” There have been a number of injuries that have led to guys being banged up and missing practice time here and there. Overall, Harris says that his group has “an opportunity to be effective.”
  • We keep hearing about the play of sixth-year senior Khaleb Coleman at receiver. We’ve seen him make some plays in the limited practice time that has been open to the media, and corner Kobe Singleton said Coleman was the toughest guy to cover. Harris continued to heap praise on Coleman, saying he has had “an awesome summer camp” and the sky is the limit for him this season Harris also highlighted that Coleman has not had a missed assignment at all during camp.
  • This shouldn’t come as a surprise, but the Flames are going to do their best to make sure Demario Douglas is on the field. Whether he’s playing in the slot or lines up somewhere else on the field, he will get plenty of snaps and opportunities.
  • Behind Demario in the slot, Liberty is currently working Jaivian Lofton, Kylen Austin, and D’Wayne Crawford. There’s also some instances where Caleb Snead or Brody Brumm can play in the slot, as well, Harris explained.
  • Speaking of Lofton, he continues to fight the injury bug. Harris stated that he “banged his knee up” a couple days ago.
  • In the scrimmage on Sunday, Brody Brumm turned a 5-yard out into a 70-yard touchdown pass and catch.
  • CJ Daniels, who tore his ACL in the first practice of the spring, does not have a timetable for return. Coach Freeze had originally said back in March that he should be ready for week one. Daniels has yet to return to practice, so his absence may stretch into the early part of the season.
  • This summer, Coach Freeze has frequently referred to the running back room as being the best it has been in his four years at Liberty. Coach Johnson agreed with that sentiment, saying the room is “special.”
  • Coach Johnson compared incoming Hawaii transfer running back Dae Dae Hunter to Marshawn Lynch, saying that he is a violent runner.
  • Johnson thinks he has four very capable backs and that there is a role for all of them – Hunter, TJ Green, Shedro Louis, and Malik Caper. It is likely that Caper will have some opportunities in short yardage situations.

Look for much more on the wide receivers and running backs in the coming days as part of our position previews. Also, keep an eye out for additional details from the other assistant coaches throughout camp.
