Liberty linebacker Aakil Washington has left the team and plans to enter the transfer portal, sources told ASOR.

Washington made an announcement on his social media accounts that hinted towards him no longer be apart of the football program without officially stating his intentions.

The 6’2″, 235 pound senior linebacker, Washington began his Liberty career at defensive end before switching to linebacker. In 2020 as a freshman, Washington played in 9 games and finished the season with 6 tackles and four QB hurries.

Over the last two years, Washington saw his impact on the field greatly increase. Over those two seasons, Washington played in all 26 games, as he totaled 73 tackles, 9 tackles for loss and 6 sacks.

This season, Washington’s playing time has been reduced. He has played in each of the four games with 4 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.

Having played in just four games this season, Washington could utilize a redshirt for the 2023 season and would have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

“Man…I don’t know where to start with this,” Washington said in his statement. “But man life is  crazy. Never would’ve thought I would be in this position. Liberty has done so much for me and I couldnt be more thankful for the Staff, the community, and the life long relationships I’ve made here at this school.”

“To everyone I’ve walked past, spoken too, laughed with, anything…I Love you and thank you for being part of my journey and giving me some of the best memories. To my Blood brothers, I hate that it didn’t go the way we wanted, but I have your guys back forever you guys are my family 4L no matter what.”

“I’ve grown in all areas of life here at Liberty and this school has changed my life for the better. The biggest blessing I got from here was the start of my relationship with Jesus Christ. This school SAVED MY LIFE and I will forever be greateful. I trust the crazy plan that God has for me and I know tha tno matter what the situation is, he is right there with me.”

“I can do nothing but smile through all of this because I know who is by my side and HIS PLAN IS GREATER. It will all work out for good. Liberty University I thank you so much for everything. Forever a Flame. Forever a vessel of Jesus Christ wherever he leads me to next.”
