The Lady Flames used a 7th inning rally in Sunday’s come from behind win over FIU to win the rubber match and secure the series victory. Liberty has now won 23 out of 24 CUSA regular season series since joining the conference. Liberty is now 7-2 all-time against the Panthers and are 5-1 in one run games this season. Sunday’s win was Liberty’s eighth comeback win of the season, including five which happened when trailing in the sixth inning or later. The Flames are now 22-23 on the season and 15-6 in CUSA play.
WEDNESDAY: #10 VIRGINIA TECH 9, LIBERTY 0
The Hokies jumped out to a 3-0 lead, as Jordan Lynch hit a two-run homer in the first and added an RBI double in the second. The Lady Flames threatened to score in the bottom of the second, getting hits from Maci Strickland and Brooke Roberts. Hokies starter Bree Carrico struck out Savanah Whatley to keep Liberty off the board. Tech added two runs in the fifth and four in the seventh as Liberty falls to 0-9 this season against nationally-ranked opponents.
Virginia Tech outhit the Lady Flames 11-4 in the game. Gabby Mike drew the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits while walking five and striking out four in four innings. Danner Allen yielded four runs on four hits in three innings, also issuing one walk. Brynn McManus, Maci Strickland, Paige Doerr, and Brooke Roberts each had one hit.
FRIDAY: LIBERTY 7, FIU 2
Liberty scored four seventh-inning runs during a two-out rally to pick up game one of the weekend series at FIU on Friday. The Lady Flames added four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The Flames led 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth. FIU got runners on second and third with two out, but Camden Anders preserved the lead with an inning-ending pop-out. In the seventh, after two quick outs, Ella Fox doubled and went to third on a wild pitch. Brynn McManus then drew a walk. A double-steal play sent Fox home. Following a walk to Savannah Jessee, Alexia Carrasquillo jumped on the first pitch she saw for a three-run homer. FIU would load the bases with one out in the seventh, but Anders got the next two batters to fly out to Paige Doerr in center, sealing the Liberty victory.
Anders improved to 11-4 on the season with the win as she allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits, while walking five and striking out four. She is now 8-1 in CUSA games this season. Carrisquillo’s 10th home run of the season was her lone hit of the day as she drove in three. Maci Strickland added a solo homer while Paige Doerr had a triple and two RBI.
SATURDAY: FIU 10, LIBERTY 4
The Panthers evened the series at one after erupting for six runs in the fifth inning on Saturday. FIU led 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth. The Panthers then put the game out of reach. Leah Clark’s RBI single made it 5-3 before a walk loaded the bases with nobody out. After a bases loaded hit by pitch and Jensen Luke RBI single, Abigail Findlay entered the circle in relief of Danner Allen. FIU added three more runs before Findlay’s strikeout ended the inning.
Gabby Mike drew the loss, allowing four runs on four hits, walking three, and striking out one in 1.2 innings before giving away to Allen (2.2 IP) and Findlay (1.2 IP). Findlay tied her career high with three strikeouts. Maci Strickland was 2 for 3 with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Dani Lee had a double and an RBI. Brynn McManus doubled while Alexia Carrasquillo and Savannah Nash drove in one run each.
SUNDAY: LIBERTY 6, FIU 5
Dani Lee hit a two-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh inning, pushing Liberty ahead for the win over FIU to give the Lady Flames the series victory.
FIU broke up a 4-0 shutout with an unearned run in the fourth and then added two in the fifth. The Panthers then loaded the bases with two outs int he bottom of the sixth, getting a go-ahead, two-run single from Janelle Martinez. The Lady Flames were down to their last strike when Paige Doerr hit a single to right, pushing pinch runner Aubry Norris to third with Doerr going to second on the throw. Dani Lee put Liberty ahead with an infield single, scoring both Doerr and Norris. After relief pitcher Abigail Findlay walked the first batter of the seventh inning, starting pitcher Camden Anders re-entered the game, getting the next three outs to nail down the save.
Findlay earned the win, walking two in a third off inning pitched. Starter Camden Anders recorded her third save of the season, pitching 6.2 innings between two stints, allowing five runs, three earned, on nine hits, walking four, and striking out four.
Paige Doerr was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored, scoring the game winning run in the seventh. Maci Strickland and Dani Lee both had a hit with two RBI. Brynn McManus was 2 for 4 with a run scored while Savannah Jessee scored twice.
