The Big South announced their end of year football honorees today. Lucas Holder was named the Big South Football Scholar Athlete of the Year. The Flames had 6 first-team honorees in wide receiver Dante Shells, defensive lineman Juwan Wells, linebacker Nick Newman, kicker Alex Probert, punter Trey Turner, and long snapper Hunter Winstead. Another 7 Flames were selected to the 2nd team in tight end Kendall Couamin, offensive linemen Lucas Holder and Dontae Duff, linebacker Dexter Robbins, defensive backs Chris Turner and Alpha Jalloh, and kick returner Frankie Hickson.

Holder is a CoSIDA Academic All-District III selection and is on the ballot for Academic All-America. He started at three different positions on the offensive lien for the Flames this season and graded out as the second-highest offensive lineman this year. Holder has a 3.90 GPA as a graduate student studying Public Policy: Public Administration. He’s the fourth player in program history to be named the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the second offensive lineman in 3 years joining Mitch Hanson in 2014.

Liberty and Charleston Southern both placed 13 players on the all-conference teams to lead the Big South. The Buccaneers led all schools with 8 first-team honorees while the Flames had the most second-team selections.
